ZÆD: SOFT & SAFE BELAY WITH WEIGHT DIFFERENCE
ZÆD is an adjustable belay resistor that allows lightweight climbers to belay their heavier climbing partner. It allows for soft belaying - our testers say ZÆD feels like belaying / being belayed by a climber of the same weight. Now you can enjoy sports climbing with soft belays, regardless of the weight difference.
Choose your ZÆD
ZÆD comes in two flavors: stainless steel and titanium. The stainless steel version is robust, affordable and perfect for gym climbing. The titanium version is 20% lighter, so it's perfect for longer approaches to your favorite crag.

Let customers speak for us
from 49 reviewsI use it for up to 30kg of weight difference and it just works sooo much better than an edelrid ohm!
Excellent device no comparison to the Edelrid Ohm. My partner is 30 Kilos less than me and i can finally project routes without having the fall in mind and whether she will hurt her feet or whether I will drop too low. You can belay naturally, give soft catches like normal and it won’t block if the climber takes rope too quickly.
We tried it in caves and vertical routes up too 8a and there are no problems. It also reduces the climbers weight(for the belayer) when lowering after the climb.
The only drawback was the rubber band but from what I read this problem has been solved
I tried the Titanium version and like the light weight. So far, I like the ZAED the most compared to Ohm (due to dynamic arrest, non unwillingly blocking and adjustibility in 3 steps!) and Bauer 1 (to be fair, need to test the Zorro still). I'd advise a better visibility of the icons of belayer/hand on the device. The Website is really cool and one sees the efforts, you've put into it; especially the chart showing weight differences/absolute weights. Maybe a shematic "inside" view showing the functioning principle could improve it more. So, all in all-veery nice :-) keep on going^^
I've been sport, ice and trad climbing for 30+ years and using the Ohm for all those disciplines for about the last 5-6 years since I have partners ranging 30-70lbs lighter than I am. The Zaed solves all my main complaints with the Ohm! As advertised, the Zaed doesn't drag on the rope unless your belayer is *really* short-roping you, it's easy to release if it starts dragging and it gives a soft catch. The adjustable friction levels are also incredibly cool since I do have a wide range of partner weights.
Recommendation
The table shows the maximum recommended weight difference for a safe and soft belay during a sports climb without and with ZÆD at its different friction levels. The adjustability makes ZÆD your perfect companion even for changing climbing partners with different weight.
TÜV tested
There's no CE / EN / UIAA standard for belay resistors yet. That's why we decided to have ZÆD tested by TÜV Austria after the strictest standards.
