ZAED pro is our climbing brake assistant for climbers with a weight difference. It makes it possible for lighter climbing partners to belay heavier climbers. Like our famous first-generation device, it offers three adjustable levels of assistance – so you can dial in the right setting based on your weight difference, rope type, and belay style.
Unlike other devices, ZAED doesn't try to keep the belayer on the ground at all costs. Its core design principle is that the belayer is gently lifted toward the first bolt in a controlled manner. This results in a soft and smooth catch – and climbers around the world tell us that using ZAED feels like climbing with a partner of the same weight.
And the best part? You don’t need to learn new belay techniques. Just belay like you’re used to when climbing with someone your own weight – that’s it.
ZAED pro includes an integrated camming mechanism that supports whippers at the first bolt. It’s designed for allround climbers who want a single device for both gym use and outdoor climbing – especially at classic crags with high first bolts, where support at the first bolt can be critical to avoid ground falls.

The new version is lighter and has now even the ability to assist with falls at the first bolt: a big advantage! Everything else is as good as it gets with such advices: no rope drag and soft catches are possible. My partner and i, who have a weightdifference of almost 20 kg use it often and are perfectly happy.
Habe viel verglichen, gefällt mir persönlich bis jetzt am besten am aktuellen Markt. Fein justierbar, leicht und gut dynamisch.
I was eager to move away from my 1st gen Ohm to this device that promised softer catches and less lock-up. I tested it indoors on vertical and overhung walls, and it worked very well! The device gives softer catches than Ohm and felt more smooth when clipping.
However, when using it outdoor, and especially routes that start with a slab or where the bolts aren't perfectly in line, the zaed is constantly locking up. Since it is much lighter than Ohm, it is also very hard to make it unlock again, and it locks up whether you try to clip fast or slow. This happened even on the lowest setting. I'm quite disappointed and the device did not live up to the expectations.
Hey Jon, thanks for your feedback. Slabs before the first bolt are a real tricky challenge for all brake assistants. They make the belayer stand in a bigger horizontal distance to the first bolt which can lead to activation when the climber pulls up rope and the belayer is not paying out slack fast enough. ZAED is designed to activate when the belay strand is loaded. So to avoid the situation of unwanted activation, please try the following with your belayer: Have them pay out slack generously when you pull up rope. Have them pay it out horizontally, not upwards. This way the rope sag will have the slack enter more vertically into the device which prevents the unwanted activation. We'll publish a video demonstrating these tricks in more detail during the next days. I hope this info helps and you can have a nice time at the crag with your ZAED.
Climb hard, Stephan

FAQ
How's ZÆD different from other devices in the market?
1.: ZÆD allows for dynamic belaying for soft whippers.
2.: ZÆD allows for a quick rope pull by the climber for easy clipping in an unstable position.
3.: ZÆD allows to adjust the friction level according to the weight difference and the steepness of the climb.
4.: ZÆD can add friction even in steep overhanging terrain.

Is ZÆD certified after CE / EN / UIAA safety standards?
There's no CE / EN / UIAA standard for belay resistors yet. That's why we decided to have ZÆD tested by TÜV Austria after the strictest standards. You can check ZÆD's TÜV test certificate.
Why are there 3 levels to adjust ZÆD?
ZÆD is adjustable to the weight difference between climber and belayer. It's also adjustable to the steepness of the climb.
Level 1 allows a climber to be belayed by a lighter belay partner.
Level 2 allows a climber to be belayed by a much lighter belay partner.
Level 3 allows a heavy climber to be belayed by a much lighter belay partner. It also allows the installation of ZÆD in a steep overhanging wall.
What's so special about ZÆD's level 3?
This level's configuration still adds friction in steep terrain where a belay resistor usually couldn't flip up high enough to create friction. We designed ZÆD to overcome this problem, so it's a suitable device for even the strongest climbers in the steepest routes of the planet.
Does ZÆD add friction if I fall into the very first bolt?
ZÆD is designed for sports climbing which mostly happens in modern gyms. Here the first quickdraw is at a height where taller climbers can nearly clip it from the ground. If a heavier climber whip into such a low quickdraw while clipping the second quickdraw, having a significantly lighter belayer at the other end of the rope, it certainly creates a grounder, whatever device is used.
We can't change the physical length of the pulled out rope in such a scenario. In fact in gyms a lead fall with some rope pulled out for clipping is considered safe in recent climbing literature from the 4th (!) quickdraw on, anything below is considered a potential grounder, depending on the circumstances. Following that chain of arguments ZÆD mini doesn’t even pretend to provide added safety at the first quickdraw.
For climbers heading outdoors, far from perfectly bolted gyms or modern crags, ZAED pro offers extra protection at the first bolt. A ground fall risk still exists – no device can remove that entirely – but if the rope above the first bolt is short enough, ZAED pro provides significant braking support. This makes a big difference at old-school crags with notoriously high first bolts, like Frankenjura, Elbsandstein, or the Red River Gorge.
If you get into a climb with a potential whipper before the 2nd bolt, we highly recommend to preclip it with a clipstick or change the belay partner for someone heavier or just skip this route for that day and get into a less sketchy route and have a nice day with your lightweight belay partner.
